GDT, The Glia External Fixator, and Vello Launch

Dear OSMS Community,

We hope this newsletter finds you well. Our dedication to being a central hub for open source medical designs and accessible health technology remains as strong as ever. In collaboration with our network partners, we continue to advocate for validation and quality assurance of open source medical supplies. We’re excited to share our latest initiatives with you!

Global Distributed Tracking

The Global Open Source Quality Assurance System (GOSQAS), a project of Public Invention and OSMS, is excited to announce the official launch of Global Distributed Tracking (GDT), featuring new video tutorials and a broader description of our pilot program with Decentralized Medical Device Manufacturing (DMDM). GDT is a free and open-source platform that enables secure, append-only tracking of objects with no logins, downloads, or personal data required. Explore resources, documentation, and opportunities to collaborate on the GOSQAS website and on GitHub.

The Glia External Fixator

In 2023, OSMS added the Imperial College external fixator to the Project Library. An essential tool for patients recovering from long bone fractures, but expensive and challenging to import to conflict zones, Imperial College’s continued research for local external fixator manufacturing has resulted in the validation of 3D printed components. Glia, in collaboration with Imperial College and Gaza trauma physicians, recently debuted these innovative fixators- the first print to OR deployment happened within twelve days. If you’re interested in this project, please consider financially supporting or contributing to the project on GitHub!

Hello, Vello!

Vello Air Purifier

You heard it here first! Air Support Project, a 501(c)3 established to increase access to clean air tools and technology for lower-income areas, is launching an air purifier based on community-driven clean air science. Targeted for early 2026, the Vello features MERV-13 filters, proven to meet or exceed HEPA filtration standards, and does not require proprietary filters- a major accessibility improvement point. Learn more about Vello and sign up for upcoming Kickstarter announcements here.

Healthware Ecosystem Survey

Healthware

The Open Source Hardware Association (OSHWA) recently completed the first-ever Healthware symposium- a series of workshops and conferences designed to explore a new certification process for open source medical hardware. OSMS attended these convenings and gratefully shared insights from our continued work in the open source medical and humanitarian world. Now, you can share your viewpoints on what should or should not be included in a Healthware certification. We are especially interested in contributions outside the US/EU. How could a new certification expand Healthware access in your community? Take the survey here– it closes September 10, 2025.

Thank you for being a part of our community. Please stay safe and be in touch!
